To romney breeder and authority Holmes Warren, his efforts to improve the breed are nothing less than akin to working on a jigsaw puzzle.
Take the time many years ago when he had to shift a mob of ewe hoggets along the road for 11 kilometres to fresh pasture. He noticed after 8km that some were making heavy weather of the trip, so marked them with a small piece of raddle.
Months later and it was time for them to make the return journey; again the same ones fell behind. The result? Those laggards failed to make the cut as breeders…
